The Number on the Pack: Where a THC Percentage Comes From

Pick up almost any pack of high-THC seeds and somewhere on the listing is a number: twenty-five percent, twenty-eight, 30. It is stated with as much confidence as the seed count, and it is nothing like as certain. The seed does not contain a percentage; it contains a ceiling, while the number on the pack is one record of how close to that ceiling a particular grower, with one particular set of lights, once came. Shops such as https://potentthcseeds.com carry lines carrying tested results up to 30 percent, and this article sets out to be a map to what sits between that number and the jar on your own shelf: how the test result is produced, why it varies, what the grower can control and what the genetics settles before it is even planted.

One Plant, One Lab, One Afternoon

A THC percentage on a seed listing originates from a lab test of cured flower. Someone, typically the breeder or a trusted evaluation grower, grew the line, selected a plant, harvested a sample, and submitted it to a lab. The lab reported cannabinoid content by dry weight and returned a certificate. The figure on the pack is usually the best result from that process, not the average.

Several things follow from that. The number refers to a single phenotype from a population that contains several. It refers to that plant in the breeder’s setup, which are rarely average. And it describes a few grams taken from somewhere on the plant, most often the top of the main cola, where trichome density is greatest. Potent THC Seeds posts the lab certificate behind every listed figure, with the number of plants grown out, which is 12 plants on most recent lines, so the range is on view alongside the peak.

Why the Report Has More Than One Figure

Open a cannabinoid report and the biggest figure is normally THCA, the acid precursor that the living plant produces. THCA turns to THC with heat, and in the conversion it loses a small group, which takes roughly twelve percent of its weight with it. A sample reading twenty-five percent THCA contains about twenty-two percent potential THC after decarboxylation.

Seed listings state the THCA number since it is larger. Some add the minor quantity of already-converted THC on top of it and skip the conversion adjustment, and this pushes the total higher still. Neither is dishonest, exactly; it is convention, and the practice favours the larger figure. The honest comparison between two lines is on “total THC”, worked out as THC plus about 0.88 times THCA, and a report that states that line separately is worth something.

Phenotype Variance

Run a whole pack of a tested line and the plants will not each hit the stated figure. Even in a stable line the range from the lowest and highest phenotype can be five or more percent of dry weight, and in a less stable line it can be more. The number on the pack lives at the top of that range; most plants land lower beneath it.

That is not a flaw in the seed, it is how seed reproduction means. Clones repeat a one plant; seeds sample a gene pool. For the grower it has one concrete lesson: running several seeds and keeping the most resinous female is the only way to get close to the label figure reliably, and a person that plants one seed and expects the advertised number is betting on the draw that they did not know they had entered.

What the Seed Decides, What the Room Decides

The clearest way to see it is as two numbers for every plant. The ceiling is genetic: the maximum THC which phenotype can produce with perfect care. Nothing in the nutrient regime, light or method lifts it. The floor is set by the room: how much under the ceiling the plant lands because some factor was missing.

Most home grows finish a long way beneath the ceiling, and the distance is almost always environmental. Which means a fact the seed market rarely states: in a grower not already hitting the ceiling of a twenty-percent line, a thirty-percent seed will not make much difference. The additional potential sits unused over the identical problems. Buying stronger genetics only makes sense after the current ones are being finished close to their ceiling.

Reaching the Ceiling

From seed and jar lie a handful of variables that are responsible for almost the entire gap, and not one of them is complicated.

  • Harvest window. THC is highest when most trichome heads are cloudy and just a few are amber; earlier it has not finished developing, past that it degrades into CBN. A week too early or too late costs measurable potency.
  • Sample selection. The lab tested the top of the best cola. Shaded buds on the same plant test lower; a grower comparing their whole harvest against the peak number is weighing the lot against a maximum.
  • Light intensity in flower. Trichome production follows photon intensity up to a limit the majority of home lamps do not approach. Underlit flowers finish looser and weaker whatever the genetics.
  • Drying and curing. Fast, hot drying burns off terpenes and converts THC to CBN; a slow dry and a proper cure keep both potency and the profile that makes it its strong.
  • Plant health through flower. Feeding problems, insects and environmental stress in the last month divert the plant’s resources aside from trichome production. A healthy, untroubled plant ends closer to its ceiling.

A Short History of the Arms Race

Forty years ago a tested THC content above ten percent was exceptional. Decades of breeding for resin, controlled growing and better testing pushed the typical figure upward over the following decades, and at some point in that rise the percentage turned from a measurement into a marketing tool.

Once buyers started choosing by the figure, breeders began chasing figures: testing many samples and keeping the best, quoting THCA as THC, using labs reputed for high results. Not one of those practices altered any seed. What genetics genuinely get stronger, but the gap between the advertised figure and the typical result widened more quickly than the plants improved. A claim of 30 percent in the current market deserves the same question as any number: measured how, from how many plants, and stated as THCA or as total THC.

Diminishing Returns Above Twenty

There is an awkward point the percentage does not express: past a given level, the perceived change from one figure to the next gets smaller. The gap between ten and twenty percent is unmistakable to any user; the difference between twenty-five and thirty is often lost under the effect of terpenes, other cannabinoids, the way the flower was cured and how it was used.

That does not make the figure meaningless; it means it a single input among several. A well-grown, properly cured twenty-two percent flower with a rich terpene range often reads as more potent than a poorly handled twenty-eight. To a buyer picking seeds, the practical reading is this: treat the percentage to exclude weak lines, and after that decide among the remaining ones on aroma, plant structure and the breeder’s reputation, rather than on the last two percent.

A Buyer’s Checklist

Everything above reduces to a few questions worth asking to any high-THC listing ahead of ordering.

  • Is the testing laboratory identified and the certificate viewable? Unverifiable numbers are claims, however they read like.
  • Does the breeder say anything about cultivation conditions? “Under high light, harvested at week ten” tells you something; nothing gives you none.
  • Does the terpene description read like a real plant or like a list of flavour words? A seller who grew the line describes it in detail.
  • Is a spread shown, or just a peak? A range means several plants were measured; a lone figure usually means one.

Practicalities

Potent THC Seeds sends each order in plain parcels with the original packs sealed inside and nothing on the outside to indicate the contents. Orders to the United States are not accepted, as seed import is restricted there. Seed law differs sharply by country: in many places buying seeds is lawful as souvenirs while germinating them is not, and in others the two are permitted under local rules or neither is. Checking the rules in your own jurisdiction is the buyer’s responsibility, and nothing of this article is legal advice.

Regular Seeds: The Archive

Walk through most seed shops today and the regular section is the shelf at the back: smaller every year, marked cheaper than the feminized packs next to it, and bought by a shrinking group of people who know exactly what they are after. It is tempting to see that as obsolescence. It is nearer to the truth to read it as a library losing shelves while the bookshop next door grows. Every female-only line started as a regular one, each new cross needs a male at some point in its pedigree, and the breadth of cannabis genetics that exists at all exists only because someone kept regular seed. Specialists such as https://breederregularseeds.com stock lines that trace to the 1980s, offered in packs of 10 seeds since a pack is intended to be a population, not a single plant. This article makes the case for that half-male pack: what the male is for, what a buyer loses by never seeing one, and how to work with a population instead of a copy.

Not Just Pollen

The easy account of a male cannabis plant is “the one that makes pollen”, and to a flower grower that is all it. For a breeder it is half the genome of every seed that follows, and half is chosen with the same attention as the mother.

A male passes on structure, vigour, flowering speed, resistance to mould and pests, resin density and the terpene chemistry just as the female does; it simply expresses several of those traits less since it does not grows a finished flower. Those who breed with regular seed spend at least as much time selecting males as females, which is the work that a feminized cross inherits and cannot replicate. Reversing a female yields pollen; it does not provide a different set of selected traits.

What Happens When Lines Are Only Selfed

A great deal of the feminized market is made from S1 seeds: a single popular clone, treated and pollinated with itself. Each generation of that process cuts in half the surviving genetic diversity, and after a couple of generations what remains is close to one plant repeated in slightly different ways.

That is acceptable for a grower who wants that single plant. It is a problem for everyone downstream. Hidden weaknesses emerge: intersex tendencies, weak stems, susceptibility to one particular mould. Traits that existed in the parent line but absent in the selected clone vanish from the population altogether. A decade of such breeding produces a market crowded with versions of the same few plants, and a breeder trying to make something different finds there is little left to work with. Regular seed from an outcrossed line is the store that replenishes the pool, and it only exists if people grows it.

How to Judge a Male

Guides on choosing females are everywhere; advice on picking males is rare, since most growers never keep one past the first week of flower to judge. For a grower producing seed, these are the marks breeders watch for.

  • Structure. Short internodes, a strong main stem and branching that resembles the desired female habit are inherited; a lanky, floppy male passes that down too.
  • Resin on the stem. Scratch a stem or a flower sac and smell it. A male with trichomes on its flower parts and a clear aroma indicates it holds the terpene traits that are worth keeping.
  • Timing. A male that declares sex first and matures in step with the females is far more workable than a very early one that releases pollen before any female is receptive.
  • Stability. A male that at the same time shows female pistils under normal stress is discarded outright; the trait is the one thing anyone wants breeding into a line.

Thinking in Numbers

The error first-time regular-seed growers make is seeing a pack as 10 attempts at the one plant. It is the opposite. A pack from a genuine outcrossed line is a sample of a population, and the point of running it is to observe the spread and choose from it.

About half the plants will be male, which means a pack of 10 seeds yields something like five females to compare and five males to either discard or assess for breeding. Among the females, look for real differences: height, finishing time, aroma, bud structure, resistance. That spread is not a flaw in the seed; it is what the seed is selling. The grower who takes cuttings from the best female and male has something a feminized pack can never offer: a pair of selected parents which are their own.

Three Ways to Cross

Holding selected parents is only worth something if making the next generation, and here the options open up. Three approaches account for most of what home breeders do.

  • Backcross. Cross a selected offspring again to one of its parents to fix a particular trait. It narrows the genetics fast and is used when a single plant shows something worth concentrating and the other contributed mostly vigour.
  • Open pollination. Allow every male reach every female. It keeps the whole range of the line, makes a generous volume of seed, and does no selection at all. This is how landrace lines are maintained alive, and it is the correct approach when the aim is preservation rather than improvement.
  • Selected cross. One chosen male on one or a few chosen females, every other plant else removed. The offspring carry the qualities of the two selected plants and express narrower variation than the parent pack. Repeated over generations with consistent choices, this is how a stable line is made.

All three need nothing more than a isolated space for the male, a paintbrush or a paper bag, and a few weeks. None of them needs the chemical reversal that feminized production does.

Landraces and Heirloom Lines

Some lines have never been feminized and probably never will be: landraces gathered from places where cannabis was grown for centuries, and heirloom crosses from the first decades of modern breeding. They are sold as regular seed because the people keeping them regard diversity as the whole value, and reversing a single clone would erase exactly what makes the line worth keeping.

Running a landrace from regular seed is different from growing a modern hybrid. There will be wide variation, extended flowering times in tropical lines, tall plants, and qualities that make sense in a mountain valley but not under a tent. Expect also aromas and chemistry that no longer appear in the commercial market anywhere. Breeder Regular Seeds keeps a separate landrace and heirloom section, with each line marked with its region of origin and the number of generations it has been grown out from the first collection.

The Honest Exclusions

None of the above turns regular seed the best choice for everyone, and claiming that it is would the category no service.

A grower with room for three plants who needs each one of them to finish is better served with feminized seed. The same is anyone unable to check the plants each day during the start of flower, since a missed male in a confined space seeds everything inside days. Someone growing a single autoflower on a balcony gets no use from a pack they cannot choose from. And a buyer who is after a specific famous plant repeated as closely as possible is better off looking for a feminized S1, not a regular cross. Regular seed is for the grower who wants to choose, to hold onto and eventually to make something new; for anyone else the back shelf is safely ignored alone.

Ordering and the Law

Breeder Regular Seeds dispatches every order in unmarked parcels with the breeder’s packs sealed inside and no on the outside to indicate the contents. Orders to the United States are not taken, as seed importation is not permitted there. Seed law varies sharply by country: in a good number of places owning seeds is lawful as collectables while germinating them is not, and in others both are allowed under local rules or neither is. Checking the position where you live is the buyer’s responsibility, and nothing of this article is legal advice.

Feminized Seeds Before the Pack Is Sealed

Tear open a pack of feminized seeds and you are holding the result of a quiet biological sleight of hand that needed breeders most of the 1990s to get right. Every one of those seeds came from two parents, and both of them were female. Not a single male plant touched the cross. Knowing how that is done, and why it holds up genetically, explains almost everything buyers want to know about feminized stock: why the female rate is given as a percentage rather than a promise, where hermies really come from, and what distinguishes a carefully bred line from a hurried one. Specialists such as https://queenfeminizedseeds.com state a female rate of 99 percent across their lines, and the remainder of this article explains what sits behind a figure like that.

The Problem a Male Plant Causes

Cannabis is dioecious: individual plants are male or female, and just the females grow the resinous flowers growers want. From a regular seed, roughly half the plants are male, which creates two problems. Fifty percent of the space, light and time go to plants that will be discarded, and a single male left for a few days in flower can pollinate an entire room, converting a flower crop into a seed crop.

Identifying plants in time is possible but not foolproof, and in a home grow the waste is proportionally larger. That is the demand that drove feminized breeding: not a wish for better genetics, but a way to guarantee that every seed sown grows a plant worth the space.

The Trick: Making a Female Produce Pollen

A female cannabis plant has two X chromosomes. Left to itself it will only make female flowers, yet under stress it can be induced to grow male flowers too, and the pollen in those flowers holds only X chromosomes, since the plant has nothing else to pass on.

Breeders trigger that switch deliberately. The standard method applies a silver solution, most often silver thiosulfate, to a chosen female just before flowering. The silver blocks the plant’s ethylene response, and ethylene is the hormone that instructs a cannabis plant to form female flowers. Deprived of that signal, the treated branches grow male flowers instead. An older method, rodelization, simply lets an unpollinated female go far past maturity until it throws a few late male flowers on its own; it still works but gives less pollen and favours plants inclined to do exactly that, which is not a habit anyone wants breeding in.

The reversed plant is only a pollen source. Its sprayed flowers are not smoked and the plant itself is retired after the pollen is collected.

The Chromosome Arithmetic

Normally a male plant passes on either an X or a Y chromosome with each pollen grain, and the Y produces a male plant. Pollen from a reversed female carries X and nothing else. Cross it with the egg of a second female, which is also X, and every possible seed is XX: female.

That is the whole basis, and it accounts for two things buyers see. First, a feminized line is never less vigorous in principle: no part of the process touches the genes beyond removing the Y. Second, so-called “S1” means pollinating a treated plant with itself, which narrows the genetics sharply; many bargain feminized lines are selfed seeds from a single clone, and they show both the strengths and the recessive weaknesses of that one plant.

Feminized Does Not Mean Unstable

The oldest objection to feminized seeds is that they throw hermaphrodites: plants that grow some male flowers within the female ones and seed themselves. The worry is understandable but mostly aimed at the wrong thing.

The capacity to hermaphrodite under stress is there in nearly all cannabis genetics, regular or feminized. What counts is how readily a given line does it. A serious breeder tests the intended parents for that tendency before treating anything: candidates that produce male flowers under mild stress, light-leak interruptions or extended flowering are dropped, and only the most stable plants are taken as parents. A careless breeder skips that screening, treats whatever is to hand, and sells seeds that carry the parent’s instability.

In other words, hermaphrodites arise from poor parent selection and from grower stress, not from the feminization method itself. The silver treatment does not pass a trait to the seed; the selection behind it is what does.

Why Not One Hundred?

Not one reputable seller advertises a one hundred percent female rate, and a number like 99 percent is an admission of how the last percent comes from. In a extremely tiny number of seeds the treatment leaves a pollen grain with a faulty chromosome set, or a seedling has the hermaphrodite tendency to a degree the testing did not catch. Across large numbers of seeds those events work out to around one in a hundred.

To a buyer that means something specific. In a pack of 5 seeds at a 99 percent rate, the likelihood that every plant is female is high but not absolute, and the practical response is nonetheless to glance at the nodes in the third week of flower. It costs a minute, and it turns up the rare exception before it has time to do any damage.

Judging the Breeder From the Listing

None of the breeding work is visible in the seed, so a buyer judges it from the description and from the breeder’s habits. Four signs are worth checking.

  • Consistent phenotype notes. A breeder who describes the variation within a line, instead of a single idealised plant, has grown enough seeds to see it.
  • Named parents on both sides. A listing that gives which clone was reversed and which was pollinated indicates a breeder operating with a pedigree rather than from whatever was in the room.
  • Stated herm testing. Breeders who test parents tend to say so, because it is slow and marks them apart. Silence on the subject is not evidence of neglect, but a note is a good sign.
  • Realistic rate. Anything above 99 percent deserves suspicion; one hundred percent is marketing, not biology.
  • Not just S1s. S1 seeds from a famous clone are quick to produce and market well, yet a line made only of them suggests little breeding work. A balance of S1s and true crosses is a better sign.

What You Give Up

Choosing feminized stock closes two doors, and each of them matter to a minority of growers.

The first is breeding in the traditional sense. Without males there is no conventional pollen, so making your own seeds means reversing a plant yourself, which needs a silver solution, a isolated space and some care. It is doable at home but much simpler than letting a male handle it. The second is phenotype hunting from a wide population. Regular seeds from a well-made line produce more diversity, which for a grower hunting for a one outstanding keeper that variation is the whole point. Feminized lines narrow the range, especially when they are selfed. For everyone else, neither one of these limitation is noticed.

Feminized and Autoflowering Together

Most autoflowering seeds sold today are also feminized, and the pairing is logical: an autoflower cannot recover the weeks lost on a male, so removing males matters even more for autos than with a photoperiod grow. The feminization process is identical; only the parents being reversed differ. Queen Feminized Seeds sells both photoperiod and autoflowering feminized lines, labelled as such so the two are not confused at checkout.

Practicalities

Queen Feminized Seeds sends each order in unmarked parcels, with the breeder’s packs sealed inside and no on the outside to indicate the contents. Orders to the United States are not taken, as seed importation is not permitted there. The legal status of cannabis seeds differs sharply between countries: in a good number of places buying seeds is legal as souvenirs while germinating them is not, and in others the two are allowed under local rules or neither is. Knowing the rules in your own jurisdiction is the buyer’s job, and nothing in this article is to be taken as legal advice.

Ten Weeks on the Autoflower Clock

Somewhere in southern Siberia there is a scrappy little cannabis plant that nobody thought to cultivate for most of history. It blooms whether the days are long or short, because where it lives the summer is too brief to wait for a signal from the sun. That plant is Cannabis ruderalis, and almost every autoflower seed sold today carries its stubborn internal clock to it. Breeders folded ruderalis into potent indica and sativa lines, and after several decades of refinement the result is a seed that completes its whole life on a fixed schedule. Specialist sellers such as https://turboautoflowerseeds.com deal in exactly that kind of seed, and the quickest line in its range is harvestable in around 56 days from sprout. This article follows a typical autoflower grow one week at a time, from the moment you choose the pack to the day you cut the plant, with the decisions that count at each stage and the errors that cannot be undone later.

Week Zero: The Pack Decides Half the Outcome

An autoflower cannot be rescued by a longer vegetative stage, so the margin for error is smaller than with a photoperiod plant and the choice of seed bears more weight. A handful of things on the pack are worth a second look.

  • Light tolerance. Some lines are selected for near-continuous light and repay it with bigger yields; others perform better at eighteen. The breeder’s note is not decorative.
  • Generation. Older autos were small and harsh; current releases are many generations removed and much closer to their photoperiod parents. A recent release from a serious breeder is a safer bet than a bargain line of unknown age.
  • Height range. Autos run from forty centimetres to well over a metre. Match the strain to the space you have, because there is no opportunity to hold the plant small by delaying flower.

Each strain on Turbo Autoflower Seeds comes with a grow sheet that states the expected height, light preference and cycle length, which takes away most of the guesswork at this stage.

Week One: The Taproot Sets the Pace

The seed cracks, a pale taproot appears, and within a few days two round cotyledon leaves break through the surface. Little about this week looks impressive, but the root that forms now is the base for everything after it.

The single decision that matters most in week one is where the seed goes. Autoflowers dislike transplanting; a disturbed root system at this stage costs days of growth that the plant cannot get back. Most growers germinate the seed directly in its final pot, or at least in a pot it will stay in. The medium should be light and only slightly damp; a seedling drowned in a big wet pot is the commonest autoflower casualty of all.

The Short Vegetative Sprint

By the start of week two the plant is producing true leaves and adding size quickly. This is the nearest thing an autoflower has to a vegetative stage, and it is finished almost before it begins.

Anything that shapes the plant has to be done now, and it has to be gentle. Tie-down training, where branches are bent sideways and held, works on most autos and opens the canopy without slowing growth. Cutting the main stem is riskier: some strains recover in days, others lose a week they cannot afford. Defoliation at this stage is nearly always a net loss. If in doubt, leave the plant be and settle for its natural shape; a slightly untidy autoflower outyields a checked one.

When Preflowers Appear

At some point between the third and fifth week, tiny white pistils show at the nodes and the plant begins to stretch. Nothing on the timer was changed; the clock made it. Here is the point that separates the autoflower: the grower is a spectator to the single most important transition in the plant’s life.

Two things shift in practice. Light can stay where it is, commonly eighteen to twenty hours a day for the whole run; there is no need to drop it to twelve, and doing so simply shrinks the harvest. And feeding moves gradually away from nitrogen towards phosphorus and potassium. Gradually is the key word: an autoflower hit a hard bloom feed in week four often shows burnt tips and stalls. Small doses, stepped up week by week, fit a plant this small.

The Middle of the Run

The stretch lasts for about two weeks and can nearly double the plant’s height, and that is why the height range on the pack was worth reading in week zero. Once it slows, flowers start to stack and the plant moves into its most productive phase.

  • Humidity. Dense autoflower buds on a plant this low stay close to damp soil; dropping relative humidity below fifty percent prevents mould before it starts.
  • Water volume. The plant uses far more than it did in week two. Pots that dry out between waterings in a day want a bigger volume per watering, not more frequent small ones.
  • Support. Big colas on a slender stem bend by week seven. A ring put in now, rather than after the weight comes, avoids broken branches.

Weeks Eight to ten: Reading the Finish

The advertised cycle length is a guide, not a deadline. Individual plants from the same pack ripen a week either side, and conditions stretch the number further. The plant, not the pack, says when it is ready.

The usual indicators: pistils turn from white to amber and retreat inward; the fan leaves yellow and fall as the plant draws its reserves into the flowers; and through a loupe the resin glands shift from clear to cloudy, with a proportion of amber. Cutting at mostly cloudy with a few amber heads is the standard compromise; more amber gives a heavier, more sedative result. Running plain water for the final week is widely done and low-risk, regardless of what the forums over its necessity concludes.

Errors Without a Reset Button

A photoperiod grower who damages a plant can extend a few weeks of veg and let it catch up. An autoflower grower has no such option; the clock goes on running. The following are the errors that show up in harvest weight every time.

  • Topping a slow or unknown strain. On the slow line it takes a week the plant never makes up.
  • Heavy feeding before week four. Autos are small feeders in the first weeks and burn easily; the setback falls exactly when the plant should be stretching.
  • Cutting the light to twelve hours “because it is flowering”. The plant never needed the signal, and the missing hours convert straight into lost yield.
  • Transplanting after the first week. Every day of root repair is a day of flower that never comes.
  • Overwatering a seedling in a large pot. The root sits in wet medium, stops, and the plant flowers at a third of its potential.

The Point of a Schedule

Everything above reads like a catalogue of constraints, and in one sense it is. But the preset clock is the reason that makes autoflowers popular, rather than a drawback to tolerate.

A grow that finishes in eleven weeks regardless can be planned to the week: sow in April, harvest in June, sow again. A balcony grower has a plant that stays below the railing. Someone in a northern climate fits two season crops into a window that permits barely one photoperiod plant. A first-time grower learns the whole cycle in less than three months instead of six, and gets to make the next attempt that much earlier. Not one of those advantages requires a bigger harvest to justify it.

How the Seeds Reach You

Turbo Autoflower Seeds dispatches every order in plain packaging, with the breeder’s seed packs sealed inside and no indication of the contents on the outer parcel. Orders to the United States are not taken, as seed import is restricted there. Seed laws differ widely by country, and in many places buying seeds is permitted while germinating them is not; checking the rules in your own jurisdiction is the buyer’s job, and nothing in this article is legal advice.

Cannabis Seeds: Germination and Types

Any cannabis plant begins as a seed, and the seed settles more than most buyers realise: the sex of the plant, how it responds to light, how tall it grows, and the balance of cannabinoids and terpenes it can develop. Choosing well at this stage saves months of lost effort later. The market has grown enormously, and https://budweedseeds.com now carries 400 strains from breeders around the world. This guide explains the main seed types, how to read a strain description, what separates a good seed from a poor one, and how to store and start them properly.

Anatomy of a Seed

A cannabis seed is a tiny, hard-shelled embryo enclosed in a protective coat. Viable seeds are usually brown, grey or mottled, solid to the touch and a little glossy. Inside sits everything the plant needs to begin: a root tip, two cotyledon leaves and a store of nutrients to fuel the first days of growth.

Genetically, each seed is a one-off combination of its two parents, and that is why two seeds from the same pack can turn out noticeably unalike. Breeders reduce that variation by stabilising a line over many generations, but some spread is normal in any seed-grown crop. Clones are the only way to get exact copies; seeds exchange that certainty for vigour, a strong taproot and the chance of a standout plant.

Regular, Feminized, Autoflowering: The Big Three

Almost every seed on sale falls into one of three categories, and the choice between them is the most important decision a buyer makes.

  • Autoflowering seeds contain ruderalis genetics that make the plant to flower on age rather than on light cycle. They are smaller, faster and more forgiving of imperfect conditions, usually at the cost of yield and potency.
  • Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost every time. For anyone growing for flower rather than for breeding, they remove the guesswork and the lost space of male plants.
  • Regular seeds give male and female plants in about equal numbers. They are favoured by breeders and by growers who want to produce their own seeds, but they mean identifying and removing males before they pollinate the females.

Feminized and autoflowering are not opposites: most autoflowering seeds sold today are also feminized, and the description normally says so. Regular autoflowering seeds exist but are rare.

When Regular Seeds Still Make Sense

For the bulk of buyers the answer is feminized. If the goal is flower, every male plant is space, light and weeks spent on something that will be thrown away, and a single missed male can seed an entire room. Feminized seeds avoid that issue completely.

Regular seeds earn their place in a few situations. Breeders need males for pollen. Growers who want to select a mother plant from a large population frequently prefer the wider genetic spread of regular stock. And some traditional lines are simply sold in regular form. Outside those cases, paying for seeds that are half male is hard to justify.

Photoperiod Control vs. Autoflower Speed

Photoperiod plants remain in vegetative growth as long as they receive long days and switch to flowering when the light drops to around twelve hours. That hands the grower control: vegetate for two weeks or two months, train the plant, then flip flowering when it suits the space.

Autoflowers ignore the light schedule and flower on a clock set by genetics, typically a few weeks after sprouting. The whole run from seed to harvest is much shorter, the plants remain small, and they can be run under long light from start to finish. The trade-off is that mistakes cannot be fixed by extending veg: a stressed autoflower stays stunted. Beginners, outdoor growers and anyone with limited height tend to do well with autos; growers after maximum yield from a fixed footprint usually choose photoperiod stock.

Translating the Product Page

A seed listing packs a lot of information into a few lines, and most of it is more useful than the strain name.

  • Flowering time. For photoperiod strains this is measured from the light flip; for autos it is often given as total time from seed. Confirm which convention the breeder uses.
  • Yield estimates. Expressed per square metre indoors or per plant outdoors, and strongly reliant on the grower. Use them to compare strains from the same breeder, not across breeders.
  • THC and CBD ranges. Quoted figures are from the breeder’s in-house tests under controlled conditions. Treat them as a ceiling, not a promise.
  • Sativa, indica or hybrid. These days almost everything is a hybrid; the percentages point at growth habit (height, internode spacing, flowering time) more than at effect.
  • Lineage. The parent strains show you what to expect in smell, structure and growth habit far better than any marketing text.

A Quick Viability Check

Appearance is a rough guide to viability, not a test, but a few signs are worth knowing.

  • Float test. Dropping seeds in water and discarding floaters is common but crude: healthy seeds often float until the shell takes on water.
  • Size. Larger is not a quality marker; seed size varies by strain, and some top genetics make small seeds.
  • Shell. A firm shell that does not crack under light finger pressure is a good sign; seeds that crush easily are dead.
  • Surface. A faint waxy sheen is normal. Cracks, dents or visible mould disqualify a seed.

Cool, Dark, Dry, Still

Cannabis seeds stay viable for years if they are stored properly and for months if they are not. The threats are warmth, light, moisture and fluctuation.

  • Keep them dry. A sealed container with a desiccant packet prevents the humidity changes that trigger premature germination or mould.
  • Keep them dark. Light breaks down the embryo over time, so an light-proof container is better than a clear one.
  • Keep them cool. A steady temperature in the fridge range holds back the seed’s metabolism without damaging it; the freezer is risky unless the seeds are bone dry.
  • Keep them still. Shifting seeds between warm and cold again and again does more damage than either temperature on its own; take out the container as seldom as possible.

Cracking the Shell

Every grower has a preferred method, but the essentials are the same in all of them: moisture, warmth, darkness and air.

  1. Soak the seeds in room-temperature water for up to a day to soften the shell. Any longer and they can drown.
  2. Move them to a damp paper towel within a closed container, or directly into a small pot of light, moist medium. Keep the temperature comfortably warm.
  3. Leave them. Most seeds show a taproot within two to five days; some need a week or more.
  4. Once the taproot is about a centimetre long, plant it root-down, shallowly, and provide gentle light once the seedling emerges from the surface.

Handle sprouted seeds as little as possible; the taproot snaps easily and a broken one frequently stops the seedling permanently.

Where the Seeds Come From Matters

Seeds are only as good as the source, and the difference between a serious seed bank and a middleman of unknown stock shows up in germination rates, rather than on the website.

  • Breeder transparency. A good seller lists the breeder for every strain. Bud Weed Seeds carries lines from Barney’s Farm, Dutch Passion and Royal Queen Seeds, among others, with the breeder named on each product page.
  • Storage on their end. Check how stock is stored. Seeds sitting in a warm warehouse for a year lose viability long before they reach you.
  • Pack options. Multiple pack sizes allow you to try a strain before committing; Bud Weed Seeds offers packs of 3, 5 and 10 seeds on most lines.
  • Clear policies. Shipping regions, packaging, and what the seller does when seeds fail to sprout should all be stated in plain language.

Delivery, Packaging and Replacements

Bud Weed Seeds ships to the EU, the UK and Canada. Orders are dispatched in discreet packaging with no mention to the contents on the outside.

Seeds come with a germination guarantee: if any seed fails to sprout within 14 days of arrival when germinated as described above, Bud Weed Seeds replaces it. The claim requires the order number and, in most cases, a photo.

Legal Grey Zones

The law on cannabis seeds is separate from the law on cannabis itself, and it varies widely by country. In many European countries seeds are traded legally as souvenirs or for hemp purposes, while germinating them stays illegal. Elsewhere both buying and growing are allowed under licence or within personal limits, and in some countries ownership of seeds alone is banned.

Bud Weed Seeds does not ship to the United States, where import of cannabis seeds is not permitted. It is the buyer’s responsibility to know the rules in their own country before ordering, and nothing on this page should be read as legal advice.

Still Wondering?

Why did a seed fail to sprout?

The most frequent causes are too long in water, cold, a medium that is too wet or too dry, and injury to the taproot during transplanting. Genuinely dead seeds are rarer than grower error.

Does Bud Weed Seeds sell CBD-only strains?

Yes. The catalogue includes CBD-dominant lines with negligible THC, marked as such on the product page, alongside balanced and THC-dominant strains.

Can I tell the sex of a seed by examining it?

No. Claims based on shape, markings or the scar at the base have no scientific basis. Only feminized breeding, or waiting for the plant to show preflowers, determines the sex.

Are autoflowering seeds weaker?

Modern autos are much closer to photoperiod strains than early ones were. Yields per plant are generally smaller because the plants are smaller, but potency in good lines is comparable.
